Despite oppression and the rise of the far right, feminists still dare to dream

Despite the obstacles, feminist solidarity remains a powerful engine of hope and resistance, as a historic global gathering in Bangkok demonstrated.

Last December, Bangkok was the scene of a landmark event: 3,500 feminists from all over the world gathered at the 14th forum of the Association for Women's Rights in Development (Awid). This meeting, entitled « Rising Together », was held after eight long years of preparation, reflecting unfailing determination in the face of an often hostile global context.

The challenges of organizing this event were numerous. Between visa restrictions, geopolitical instability and climate crises, many have been unable to make the trip. Lebanese activists were hampered by military tensions in Israel, while Haitian feminists saw their movements prevented by gang violence that paralyzed their airport. These obstacles are a reminder of the systemic violence that women face every day, while highlighting the importance of these gathering spaces.

This forum was not just a meeting; he was also a refuge, a space for resist and to dream. In a context where the political gains of the far right and the rise of anti-feminist movements threaten the gains made, this gathering embodied the very essence of feminist resilience.

Growing up in Zimbabwe, activist Faye Macheke bore witness to the interconnectedness of oppressions. Racism, patriarchy and economic injustice cannot be fought in isolation. This principle of interconnection was at the heart of the forum, where participants exchanged, learned, reflected and imagined a fairer future.

Heartbreaking stories of women on the front lines of conflicts, from Gaza to Burma, were shared. These stories sparked a mixture of sadness at the unimaginable losses and pride at their resilience. A particularly poignant moment was sending messages of solidarity to Afghan feminists, facing brutal repression under the Taliban regime. These testimonies highlighted the capacity of feminist movements to create a culture of hope, even in the face of violence.

Beyond the speeches, art was omnipresent, expressing joy, sorrow and struggle at the same time. From art installations to poetry performances, the forum showed that feminism is not just about political struggle; he is also a cultural and emotional expression.

The theme « Rising Together » resonated as a call to action. To survive and thrive, feminism must go beyond crisis reactions; he must continue to imagine visionary solutions for a more equitable world.

This gathering was a reminder that, despite oppression, feminists around the world continue to resist andinspire. By daring to dream and uniting, they show that the fight for equality and justice has no borders.
