A shooting tragedy took place at Philadelphia, in the United States, causing five deaths and two injuries. An individual, wearing a bulletproof vest, opened the fire indiscriminately, sowing terror among the inhabitants.
The attack took place in the neighborhood of Kingsessing, southwest of the city. Authorities quickly apprehended the suspect, a 40-year-old man, who was armed with a type rifle. AR-15a pistol, and in possession of a a police scanner as well as ammunition..
According to police, no relationship between the shooter and the victims has been established so far. THE motivations of this attack therefore seem to be random and still remain unknown.
Law enforcement was alerted to the shooting and discovered several gunshot victims. While they were evacuating the injured to the hospital, they heard more gunshots, which led to a chase with the suspect. Exchanges of fire took place, damaging parked vehicles and peppering the streets with shell casings.
Around 8:40 p.m. local time (00:40 GMT Tuesday), the shooter was surrounded by police in an alley. He surrendered without further resistance and was taken into custody.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said the motives for the attack remain unclear. She said: "At this stage we only know that this person deliberately left his home to prey on other people. I have absolutely no idea why he did this."
Investigators are carrying out in-depth investigations to gather testimonies and search for surveillance camera recordings that could provide answers to the circumstances of the shooting.
The speed of intervention by the police probably made it possible to avoid an even heavier death toll. A large security perimeter was established over eight blocks, where numerous shell casings were found. Experts carefully analyze the crime scene for crucial evidence.
The shooter has not yet been identified and authorities are continuing their investigations to determine a possible motive. Initially, authorities announced the deaths of four people, all men aged 20 to 59. The two injured children, aged two and thirteen, were taken to hospital and are in stable condition.
However, during the night, a fifth body was discovered inside a building in the same neighborhood, bringing the number of victims to five. Another person was arrested for allegedly returning fire at the shooter, but it is not yet clear whether he is connected to the incident.
This tragic shooting in Philadelphia comes a day after another attack in Baltimore, Maryland, where two people died and 28 others were injured, including many children, during an annual community gathering.
