Madrid, May 24 — Palantir Technologies formalized on Friday a multi-year framework agreement with the Spanish Ministry of Defense to deploy its “Gotham” artificial intelligence platform throughout the national theater of operations, the American group announced during a ceremony at the headquarters of the Defense Staff, on rue de la Moncloa. The agreement, negotiated under high confidentiality since the NATO summit in Vilnius in July 2023, positions Spain as the first southern European user of the complete software suite for real-time joint management.
Founder and CEO Alex Karp, dressed in his usual dark suit, initialed the document alongside Minister Margarita Robles and the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral General Teodoro Esteban López Calderón, sealing a technical negotiation begun eighteen months ago by the teams of the National Innovation Agency (INTA). The contract provides for the gradual integration of the software into the command centers of the Army, Air Force and Navy, as well as the brand new Air Force Space Center in Torrejón de Ardoz, by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
The financial envelope, although not made public by the two parties, exceeds, according to several sources close to the matter, 300 million euros over the initial period of four years, excluding renewal options and additional modules. Madrid thus becomes the sixth country in the Atlantic Alliance to adopt the complete software architecture of the American data specialist for its joint management, joining the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Norway and Lithuania in a very exclusive club of major state clients.
Minister Robles described the agreement as a “major capability leap” in the face of hybrid threats, emphasizing the sovereignty of data which will remain hosted on “NATO Secret” certified servers within the national territory, managed by the Defense Information Processing Center (CTID). No sensitive data will leave the Spanish military infrastructure, she guaranteed to the press, thus responding to parliamentary criticism from the Sumar coalition who feared an American takeover of national intelligence.
This signature comes three weeks after the definitive green light from the Bundestag for the extension of the German Maven project, confirming the European acceleration towards Palantir solutions despite recurring debates on technological dependence on Washington. The Denver group, listed on the NYSE, now counts six nations of the Atlantic Alliance among its major state clients, consolidating a “land and expand” strategy initiated in 2019 with the founding contract of the American Special Operations Command.
Palantir stock jumped 4.2% as Wall Street opened Thursday evening, pushing its market capitalization past $55 billion, its highest level since January 2021. Jefferies analysts estimate that the Spanish market, coupled with the ten-year software maintenance outlook, could generate annual recurring revenue in excess of $120 million as early as 2026 if expansion options for cyber defense and space intelligence are exercised as planned.
Karp warned during an impromptu press briefing in the ministry's gardens that the company would refuse any price revision clause unilaterally imposed by a member state, recalling that algorithmic maintenance and continuous training of models require cutting-edge engineering billed at real cost. “We are not a license provider, we are an operational partner who assumes the technical risk,” he told a handful of accredited journalists, ruling out any comparison with traditional SaaS models.
The next Spanish-American bilateral steering committee is scheduled for September 12 in Brussels, on the sidelines of the NATO Defense Chiefs Summit, where the first interoperability metrics between the Gotham platform and the Spanish legal systems SICOMORA and TRACER will be presented to the allies.
