The Rodari primary school in Podenzano, located in the province of Piacenza, has been at the center of a lively union and political controversy since the removal of a banner made by students. The poster, which bore the inscription “Here no one is foreign”, was taken down from a wall in the central corridor by explicit decision of the director of the establishment, immediately triggering the anger of teachers and worker representatives.
The Flc-Cgil denounced the management's initiative by describing the act of censorship as unacceptable within a public establishment subject to the constitutional principles of integration. The teachers' union criticizes the manager for stopping an educational project focused on living together and tolerance, developed as part of religion classes.
The management of the establishment justified this emergency measure by citing the lack of prior formal authorization for the display of the document in common areas. According to the school manager, any permanent or temporary visual installation in the corridors must follow a strict administrative procedure in order to guarantee the neutrality of the public space.
The Gilda degli Insegnanti of Parma and Piacenza took the floor in turn to support rigorous compliance with internal regulations and demand an end to the controversies. The union organization recalls that management's decision is based on precise legal standards governing school premises.
Teachers remain public agents in the exercise of their functions within state establishments, underlines the official note distributed by Gilda. The union asks that the educational institution be spared any ideological or political exploitation from outside.
Several teachers from the Podenzano school expressed their disagreement on social networks the afternoon following the director's intervention. These educational staff plan to adapt the message of inclusion on individual media, in particular by having t-shirts printed with the same slogan for the next school days.
The tensions observed in Podenzano reflect the recurring debates in Italy around the autonomy of school leaders and the limits of freedom of educational expression. Trade unions in the Emilia-Romagna region are continuing their consultations to decide on possible collective protest actions.
An information meeting between the management of the Rodari school, representatives of parents and union delegates was set for Tuesday, November 11 to try to defuse the crisis.
