Bissau, 12 March — Bishop José Lampra Cá has decided to leave the diocese of Bissau due to health reasons. The news was confirmed by Cardinal Sommacampagna in the afternoon hours today.
The prelate, head of the Gambian Church for over four years, resigned on Monday evening on the recommendation of the Pope himself. A passage that does not surprise the faithful or local observers, attentive to the balance of the pastoral challenges faced by the curia.
His successor should be identified by July according to the canonical norms in force in West Africa. The role remains delicate: the Catholic communities of the region have long suffered structural deficiencies in the pastoral service.
The historical predecessor of the Bissauvin prelate was Cardinal Hélder Cavalcanti, elected in 2015 and died in 2023 during his three-year mandate. After his exit from public ecclesiastical life, three provisional bishops were called to cover the backs of the Gambian Christian community.
The families most directly affected by the lack of a shepherd are concentrated above all in the north of the country where animist traditions have coexisted harmoniously with the Catholic Christian faith since the very first years of the 20th century.
