The National Basketball Association has officially ended the proposed promotional party that the Atlanta Hawks had organized in collaboration with Magic City, an iconic strip club in the city. This decision, announced on March 9, 2026 by Commissioner Adam Silver, comes after several days of internal debate and public criticism regarding the nature of this event.
Initially scheduled for March 16, 2026, this evening called “Magic City Monday” was to include a live performance by rapper T.I., originally from Atlanta, as well as various promotional activities linked to the establishment. The Hawks had presented this collaboration as a celebration of local culture, but this initiative quickly raised questions about its adequacy with the values promoted by the professional league.
In his official statement, Adam Silver explained that the cancellation represented “the appropriate decision for the entire NBA community.” The commissioner stressed the importance of maintaining a respectful environment for all fans, players and league partners, although he did not go into specific detail about the concerns that led to this turnaround.
The controversy grew when Luke Kornet, center of the San Antonio Spurs, published a blog post calling on the Hawks to abandon this promotion. The player notably mentioned the need to create “a protective and respectful atmosphere for daughters, wives, sisters, mothers and partners” associated with the world of basketball.
Kornet's reaction itself provoked varied responses in the sporting world. Commentator Michelle Beadle strongly criticized the player's position, believing that his intervention lacked nuance and did not take into account the specific cultural context of Atlanta where Magic City occupies a particular place beyond its primary function.
This cancellation is part of a broader debate on promotional partnerships in American professional sport. Many franchises seek to develop collaborations with local companies to strengthen their territorial roots, but must constantly evaluate the compatibility of these associations with their brand image and their declared values.
Magic City, founded in 1985, has become over the decades a cultural institution in Atlanta, frequented by many celebrities and musicians. The establishment has often been associated with the local hip-hop scene, which explains why the Hawks initially saw the collaboration as a tribute to the cultural identity of their home city.
This decision by the NBA illustrates the permanent tensions between the desire of franchises to integrate into their local environment and the need to maintain professional standards acceptable to the entire league. It also demonstrates the growing influence of players and commentators in debates regarding the ethics and values of professional sport.
