La NASA élimine le risque d'impact d'un astéroïde sur la Lune en 2032

The US space agency announced a crucial update regarding asteroid 2024 YR4, following observations made on February 18 and 26, 2026. These data, collected by the James Webb Space Telescope, allowed experts at NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies to significantly refine the trajectory of this celestial object.

Initially, preliminary calculations had suggested a low probability of impact with the Moon on December 22, 2032, raising concerns in the scientific community. The asteroid, approximately 60 meters in diameter, was classified as a “city killer”, capable of causing significant damage in the event of a collision with Earth.

The new observations have completely eliminated this disaster scenario. According to the latest analyses, 2024 YR4 will pass at a safe distance of 13,200 miles, or about 21,200 kilometers, from the lunar surface. This increased accuracy demonstrates continued progress in monitoring potentially dangerous space objects.

This announcement comes in a context where planetary defense is becoming a growing priority for international space agencies. NASA is working closely with the European Space Agency and other partners to develop systems for detecting and responding to asteroid threats.

The role of the James Webb telescope is particularly decisive in these efforts. Its advanced instrumentation provides extremely precise measurements, essential for confidently predicting the trajectories of asteroids over long periods of time.

Scientists emphasize that this achievement illustrates the importance of continued investment in space technology. The ability to quickly and accurately assess cosmic risks represents major progress for the security of our planet.

Although the immediate danger has passed, monitoring of 2024 YR4 will continue. Astronomers will continue to follow its trajectory to ensure that no unforeseen changes occur, while studying its composition to better understand these celestial visitors.

This reassuring news, however, reminds us of the need to maintain constant vigilance in the face of near-Earth objects. The international space community remains mobilized to protect the Earth against potential threats from space.
