The Minister of Economy, Trade and Enterprise, Carlos Cuerpo, recently spoke about the economic repercussions of the conflict in the Middle East on Spain. During a television interview, he stressed that consumers are already starting to feel the effects of this geopolitical situation on their purchasing power.
According to the minister's estimates, the rise in oil and natural gas prices is expected to result in a complete increase in gasoline and diesel costs within four to ten days. This period corresponds to the time necessary for international market fluctuations to impact local gas stations.
The Spanish government is closely monitoring the evolution of the crisis, fearing a new inflationary surge. Regional tensions have already caused a surge in the prices of energy commodities, which threatens the country's economic stability after a period of relative calm.
Faced with this situation, the executive plans to reactivate an anti-crisis plan similar to that deployed in 2022 during the war in Ukraine. This system, with an estimated value of 20,000 million euros, included tax reductions, direct aid to households and interventions in the electricity market.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, confirmed that measures will be taken to protect citizens. He specified that the plan in preparation will be based on two pillars: temporary socio-economic actions and structural reforms intended to strengthen long-term resilience.
Independent authorities, such as the Independent Fiscal Responsibility Authority, had already assessed the budgetary impact of previous measures. Their expertise could be called upon to refine the new proposals, in order to avoid financial imbalances.
Spanish consumers, already affected by successive crises, are worried about this new price increase. User defense associations are calling for increased transparency on the formation of tariffs and targeted protection mechanisms for the most vulnerable.
In this context, Minister Carlos Cuerpo's communication aims to prepare public opinion while reassuring about the State's capacity to react. The next few days will be crucial to observe the evolution of the markets and the effectiveness of the measures announced.
