L'aéroport de Wilmington anticipe une croissance massive avec des investissements majeurs

Wilmington International Airport (ILM), located in North Carolina, is facing a dramatic increase in passenger traffic, from 760,000 travelers a decade ago to nearly 1.8 million today. This rapid growth poses significant challenges in capacity and facility modernization.

Airport officials, led by Jeffrey Bourk, presented an ambitious plan Tuesday morning to meet this growing demand. In a special joint meeting with the New Hanover County Airport Authority, they outlined investment needs, estimated at approximately $250 million.

These capital projects aim to expand terminals, improve runways and upgrade safety equipment. The aim is to prepare the airport to welcome more than 3.6 million passengers by 2036, double the current figure, while ensuring a seamless experience for travelers.

The Wilmington region benefits from a dynamic economy, attracting new residents and visitors, which partly explains this increase in air traffic. Local authorities recognize that these investments are essential to support the economic and tourist development of the area.

Discussions at the meeting highlighted priorities including expanding parking lots, adding new gates and improving baggage handling systems. These improvements are also expected to create local jobs during the construction phase.

Elected officials and community members have expressed their support for these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the competitiveness of the airport compared to other regional hubs. However, questions remain about funding and the precise timetable for the work.

At the same time, ILM airport is exploring partnerships with airlines to expand its destination offering, thus meeting the growing demand from business and leisure travelers. This strategy could further accelerate the expected growth in the coming years.

This development is part of a national trend where many regional airports in the United States must adapt to a constant increase in traffic. Lessons learned from these experiences could serve as a model for other similar infrastructures across the country.
