On the night of Monday to Tuesday, Russian forces carried out a new series of strikes against the city of Kharkiv, located in northeastern Ukraine. According to regional governor Oleg Synegubov, this attack caused the death of four people and injured six people. Details of the incident were communicated via Telegram, where Ukrainian authorities regularly share information on developments in the conflict.
Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene of the impacts, notably in a building occupied by the postal company Nova Poshta. Images released by the regional prosecutor's office show rescuers equipped with white helmets working in still smoking rubble. These scenes illustrate once again the violence of the bombings which strike Ukrainian territory on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov reported that a Russian long-range drone hit a children's medical facility, causing a fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this specific attack. This target raises concerns about respect for international humanitarian law, which protects health infrastructure in times of conflict.
The nighttime strikes were not limited to the Kharkiv region. In the south of the country, the city of Odessa was also targeted, with damage reported to residential buildings, a hospital and a kindergarten. Regional Governor Sergiy Lysak said at least five people were injured in two separate waves of attacks. These events are a reminder that the conflict extends across the entire Ukrainian territory, affecting civilian populations in various regions.
These attacks are part of a broader strategy by Moscow, which has been intensifying its drone and missile barrages for several months. Energy infrastructure is particularly targeted, leading to power outages in the middle of winter. This approach aims to weaken Ukraine's resilience by disrupting essential services and exacerbating already difficult living conditions for civilians.
Russia's recent use of an Oreshnik ballistic missile, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, has drawn strong condemnation from Kyiv's allies. Washington called the action “a danger and an inexplicable escalation of this war.” Moscow justifies the strike by saying it targeted an aircraft repair factory in the Lviv region, in response to a Ukrainian attempt to strike a residence of President Vladimir Putin, which Kyiv categorically denies.
The regional context remains extremely tense, with persistent clashes on several fronts. Russian airstrikes continue to wreak death and destruction, while Ukrainian forces attempt to contain the enemy advance. The international community is closely monitoring these developments, fearing a further escalation in a conflict that has lasted for several years.
Ukrainian authorities regularly call for increased air defense support to protect cities from attacks. Civilian casualties and destruction of critical infrastructure highlight the urgency of strengthening the country's defensive capabilities.
