Listeriosis in France: health alert after cases linked to a delicatessen in Drôme

A national health alert was launched in France after the identification of several cases of listeriosis linked to the consumption of charcuterie products. Health authorities, in coordination with Public Health France, have confirmed twelve infections that occurred between October 2025 and January 2026, two of which resulted in the death of elderly people with comorbidities.

The Drôme Ardèche Tradition company, based in Bourg-de-Péage in Drôme, is at the heart of this affair. It produced the cold meats suspected of being the source of the contamination. As soon as the link was revealed, the group assured to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigations and immediately implemented an action plan to manage the crisis.

On February 24, 2026, state services ordered the withdrawal and recall of the incriminated products. This preventive measure aims to avoid new exposures, while the median age of affected patients is 81 years, a population particularly vulnerable to serious infections caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The food and traceability investigations carried out by the authorities made it possible to quickly trace the source of the contamination. This responsiveness illustrates the effectiveness of epidemiological surveillance systems in France, which make it possible to intervene promptly in the event of a threat to public health.

Listeriosis is a bacterial infection often contracted by ingesting contaminated foods, including unpasteurized dairy products, cold meats or smoked fish. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, with increased risks for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

In the current context, this alert recalls the importance of strict health controls in the food industry. It also raises questions about safety protocols at every stage of production, from processing to distribution of perishable goods.

Consumers are invited to check the origin of the products purchased and to respect the expiry dates. If in doubt, it is recommended not to consume the cold meats concerned and to return them to the points of sale for a refund or exchange.

This situation highlights the ongoing food safety challenges in Europe, where collective vigilance remains essential to prevent such incidents. Lessons learned from this episode could lead to stronger standards and better communication between actors in the food chain.
