Teachers' strike in Barcelona: a week of mobilization for better conditions

Teachers in Catalonia began a week of strike this Monday, marked by major disruptions in schools and on access roads to Barcelona. This mobilization, which extends until Friday, aims to demand salary improvements, a reduction in student-to-class ratios and a reduction in administrative tasks. The Ustec and Professors de Secundaria unions, supported by the CGT and the Intersindical, are at the origin of this protest movement.

According to estimates, around 8,000 people took part in the first protests in Barcelona, temporarily blocking some of the city's arteries. Strikers organized processions and pickets in front of schools, leading to partial or total closures in many middle and high schools. This action takes place in a context of persistent tensions between the Catalan government and part of the teaching profession.

The strike comes after an agreement signed in February between the Generalitat of Catalonia and the CCOO and UGT unions, providing for a salary increase of 3,000 euros. However, other trade union organizations consider this agreement insufficient and are calling for more ambitious measures to improve working conditions. They denounce in particular the excessive bureaucratic burden and the lack of resources for the inclusion of students in difficulty.

Disruptions are expected to continue throughout the week, with strike days spread geographically across Catalonia. Organizers announced a final demonstration in front of Catalonia's parliament on Friday, coinciding with protests by doctors and a debate on the regional budget. This convergence of social movements could amplify the impact of the mobilization.

Local authorities have put in place measures to minimize inconvenience for users, but delays are expected on public transport and around schools. Parents of students are invited to contact the establishments to find out the arrangements for welcoming children. Some municipalities have organized emergency childcare services to deal with closures.

This strike is part of a series of recent social movements in Catalonia, reflecting broader concerns over the financing of public education. Teachers emphasize that the demands relate to the quality of education and the future of future generations. They believe that additional investments are necessary to maintain an efficient and equitable education system.

The Catalan government, led by Salvador Illa, has expressed its desire to dialogue with all unions to find a solution to the conflict. Negotiations are underway, but positions remain far apart on several key points. The next few days will be decisive in assessing the impact of the strike and the possibility of a lasting compromise.

The mobilization of Catalan teachers highlights the structural challenges facing the education sector in Spain. As the region seeks to stabilize its school system, this strike serves as a reminder of the importance of decent working conditions to ensure student success. The outcome of this movement could influence educational policies in other autonomous communities.
