This Monday, March 16, 2026, motorists in the Bilbao region experienced a particularly chaotic start to the week on the roads. From the early hours of the morning, a multiple accident paralyzed several major roads, creating considerable delays for thousands of people going to work or their activities.
The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. on the Txorierri corridor, a crucial axis for traffic in the province of Biscay. Nine vehicles were involved in this collision, requiring the rapid intervention of emergency services. The seriousness of the situation forced the authorities to close three of the four traffic lanes towards Galdakao.
The consequences of this accident quickly spread to other major arteries in the region. La Avanzada, the A-8 as well as the areas of Rontegi, Barakaldo and Cruces also suffered massive traffic jams. For almost four hours, traffic remained extremely heavy, significantly disrupting mobility throughout Greater Bilbao.
Emergency services worked around the clock to secure the scene and evacuate damaged vehicles. No information regarding possible serious victims was immediately communicated, but the authorities confirmed the presence of several minor injuries. Priority was given to restoring traffic in optimal safety conditions.
Alongside this main event, another accident that occurred near San Mamés further complicated the situation on the A- towards Cantabria. This accumulation of incidents created a domino effect, making traffic management particularly difficult during this morning rush hour.
Motorists had to be patient as navigation apps and real-time traffic information reported travel times increased by three or four times. Many workers have been forced to find alternative routes or postpone their trips.
Around 12:46 p.m., after several hours of intervention, the situation was finally able to return to a certain normality. The three lanes previously closed on the Txorierri were reopened to traffic, allowing traffic to gradually resume. The authorities, however, maintained increased vigilance across the entire road network.
This episode highlights the vulnerability of transport infrastructure to this type of incident, particularly during busy times. It also highlights the importance of real-time information systems to guide users and minimize impacts on urban and peri-urban mobility.
