The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a historic decision by withdrawing the title of the 2025 African Cup of Nations from Senegal and entrusting it to Morocco. This announcement comes after the serious incidents that occurred during the final played in Rabat, where Senegalese supporters were involved in acts of vandalism.
The facts date back to February 19, 2025, the date when Morocco and Senegal competed for the continental trophy. After the match, scenes of violence broke out around the stadium, leading to the arrest of several supporters. The Moroccan authorities then initiated proceedings for hooliganism.
Eighteen Senegalese supporters were sentenced at first instance to prison terms ranging from three months to one year. Their appeal trial, initially scheduled recently, was postponed to March 30, 2026 by the Rabat Court of Appeal, at the request of their lawyers who wanted more time to prepare their defense.
CAF's decision to withdraw the title from Senegal is based on the organization's disciplinary regulations, which provide for severe sanctions in the event of violent behavior by supporters. This exceptional measure aims to preserve the integrity of sport and send a strong message against violence in stadiums.
For Morocco, this retroactive attribution of the title represents an additional consecration after a brilliantly organized competition. The country had already demonstrated its organizational capabilities during previous major sporting events, thus strengthening its position in the African football landscape.
Reactions in Senegal were mixed, oscillating between sporting disappointment and recognition of the responsibilities of the convicted supporters. The Senegalese football authorities announced that they would study possible appeals, while calling for calm and respect for judicial decisions.
This case raises broader questions about security at major sporting events in Africa. Many observers are calling for a strengthening of preventive measures and better collaboration between the organizing countries and the participating nations.
The impact of this decision could influence the future responsibilities of organizing major competitions, with increased attention paid to security guarantees and the behavior of supporters. CAF reiterated its commitment to promoting clean and respectful football across the continent.
