A moderate earthquake shakes the Málaga region overnight

An earthquake of moderate intensity shook the Málaga region during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, causing perceptible tremors in many municipalities. The event, which occurred at 12:24 a.m. local time, was recorded in the Mar de Alborán, at a depth of approximately 76 kilometers, according to preliminary data from seismic authorities.

Residents of Benajarafe, Campanillas, Torre del Mar and Alhaurín el Grande in particular reported feeling the vibrations. Although the epicenter is located at sea, the magnitude estimated at 4.4 was enough to generate a notable seismic wave on the coast and in the Malaga hinterland.

Emergency services reported no injuries or significant material damage following this earthquake. However, local authorities have activated their monitoring protocols to assess possible aftershocks, while reassuring the population of the usual nature of such phenomena in this geologically active area.

The Mar de Alborán, located between Spain and Morocco, is known for its regular seismic activity due to the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. This event takes place in a context of increased surveillance, with scientists recalling the importance of early warning systems for coastal regions.

Social media quickly relayed testimonies from residents surprised by the tremors, some describing muffled noises and brief vibrations. These reactions illustrate the sensitivity of the population to terrestrial movements, even when their intensity remains limited.

At the same time, experts emphasize that the depth of the earthquake helped to mitigate its impact on the surface. A similar magnitude at shallow depths could have caused more disruption, highlighting the complex variables of seismic risk assessment.

This incident also recalls the importance of the seismic construction standards in force in the region, reinforced after the historic earthquakes which affected Andalusia. Modern infrastructure appears to have held up well, confirming the effectiveness of preventive measures.

As life returns to normal, seismologists continue to analyze data to refine their prediction models. Vigilance remains required, as the area could experience further tremors in the coming days, although the probability of a major event is considered low.
