To counter hunger and Cholera on Haitian territory, the United Nations (UN) and its partners have launched a fundraising effort targeting 145.6 million US dollars.
According to the UN, this amount is intended to help citizens cope with the new wave of cholera and provide considerable aid to nearly 1.4 million people living in the most affected areas.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Ulrika Richadson said Cholera is a preventable and treatable disease. Drawing on their experience and know-how, national institutions quickly put in place a response strategy in favor of the entire local and international humanitarian community.
The increase in the number of infected people and the speed of spread of the virus are worrying to say the least. More than 500,000 people are at risk of contracting the disease, according to OPC/WHO
In a new bulletin published on November 14 by the Ministry of Public Health and Population, 8,708 suspected cases of Cholera, 802 confirmed cases and 162 deaths recorded throughout the national territory.
The average age of people hospitalized is 20 years old, underlined the MSPP.
A latest analysis carried out by the United Nations on food in Haiti shows that nearly 4.7 million people, or half of the population, experience high levels of food insecurity, with 19,200 people in a disaster situation, a first in the history of the country.
In addition, Haitians face an increase in violence from armed gangs, which occupy almost the entire national territory.
