The Catalan literary world celebrates an emblematic figure with the awarding of the 58th Prize of Honor for Catalan Letters to Biel Mesquida. Announced this Thursday, March 19, 2026, this prestigious award rewards a rich and diverse career, marked by a constant commitment to language and creation.
Biel Mesquida, born in 1947 in Castell de la Plana in Majorca, is recognized for his polymorphous work, ranging from poetry to novels including literary criticism. His unique background, combining biology and communication, allowed him to address universal themes with particular sensitivity, thus strengthening Catalan cultural heritage.
During the award ceremony, scheduled for June 8, 2026 at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Mesquida expressed his vision of a writer “in the trenches of writing.” This metaphor underlines his refusal to allow himself to be “museumized”, preferring to remain active and engaged in contemporary debates, particularly on the defense of the Catalan language.
The Honorary Prize for Catalan Letters, established in 1969 by Òmnium Cultural, recognizes each year a personality who has contributed significantly to the enrichment of Catalan culture. Mesquida thus succeeds the philosopher Pere Lluís Font, perpetuating a tradition that values excellence and innovation in letters.
In a context where the Catalan language faces political and social challenges, this distinction takes on a strong symbolic dimension. Mesquida, through his writings and positions, embodies a resilient voice that calls for preserving linguistic and cultural diversity in Spain, particularly in regions like the Balearics.
Biel Mesquida's work, characterized by its humanism and its exploration of human values, resonates with current concerns. His texts, often tinged with poetry, invite reflection on identity, memory and passion, offering valuable insights in these uncertain times.
This award comes at a key moment for Catalan culture, when language promotion initiatives are increasing. It highlights the crucial role of writers like Mesquida, who, through their creativity, help keep a rich and dynamic literary tradition alive.
In short, the 2026 Catalan Letters Honorary Prize honors not only a talented author, but also a tireless defender of culture. Biel Mesquida, through his journey and his message, inspires a new generation to engage in creation, reminding us that writing remains a powerful tool for shaping the future.
