Canary Islands suspend classes due to storm Therese

The educational authorities of the Canary Islands have taken an exceptional decision by suspending face-to-face classes on Thursday March 19, 2026 on several islands in the archipelago. This measure, motivated by the unfavorable weather conditions linked to storm Therese, aims to protect the safety of students and educational staff.

The suspension initially concerns the western islands, such as Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, as well as La Graciosa. At the end of the day on Thursday, it will spread to Gran Canaria, before affecting the entire territory on Friday. The authorities justify this progressive approach by the need to adapt the measures to the evolving situation.

Families were informed of the practical arrangements, particularly for the management of school canteens. Children must be picked up at 2 p.m. after lunch, with the possibility of a second round at 3 p.m. in the event of difficulties. Afternoon extracurricular activities are also canceled.

This decision is part of the recommendations of the General Directorate of Emergencies and Civil Protection. The authorities emphasize the importance of avoiding any non-essential travel which could expose the population to dangers, particularly on roads potentially affected by bad weather.

Storm Therese, which is currently hitting the region, has led to weather alerts in several areas. Emergency services are on high alert to intervene if necessary, while schools remain closed until further notice.

The consequences of this suspension on the academic calendar remain to be evaluated. The Ministry of Education is studying solutions to make up for lost hours, without compromising student safety. Additional announcements are expected in the coming days.

This situation reminds us of the importance of emergency protocols in regions prone to climatic hazards. The Canaries, due to their island geography, are particularly vulnerable to weather disruptions, requiring a rapid and coordinated response from the authorities.

Residents are invited to follow the instructions of the authorities and to stay informed via official channels. The priority remains the safety of all, with a return to normal expected as soon as conditions permit.
