The region of Las Merindades, located in the province of Burgos in Spain, is currently going through a period of social and security tensions. Residents of this rural area have to deal with daily challenges related to access to public services and security, issues that have recently taken on a significant scale.
In December 2025, the only pharmacy in Villasante, a key village in Merindad de Montija, permanently closed its doors. This establishment, open since 1986, provided a vital service for local populations, particularly the elderly and families. Its disappearance has created a worrying crawl space, forcing residents to travel long distances to obtain medication.
Faced with this situation, eighteen associations representing various sectors – cultural, sporting, youth and hunting – met on March 20, 2026 in Villasante. They presented a press release demanding the immediate reopening of the pharmacy. The collectives refuse the alternative proposal of a simple botiquín, a solution deemed insufficient by the local authorities, who are still awaiting a response from the Consejería de Sanidad.
This citizen mobilization illustrates the difficulties encountered by Spanish rural areas in terms of health services. Association representatives emphasize that the closure affects not only Villasante, but also the surrounding villages, exacerbating territorial inequalities. Discussions with regional authorities continue, with no guarantee of a rapid resolution.
At the same time, security incidents have marked the region. During the night last weekend, the Guardia Civil intercepted and arrested a 38-year-old man in a town in Las Merindades. The individual, who tried to flee a patrol, is suspected of several crimes, including driving without a license and drug trafficking.
The events took place while the officers were driving in the area. The arrest highlights drug-related road safety and public health issues, challenges that concern law enforcement and local communities. This event recalls the need for a reinforced police presence in these isolated areas.
The combination of these two crises – health and security – raises broader questions about governance and regional development. Local and regional authorities are called upon to find lasting solutions to guarantee access to care and maintain public order, while taking into account the specificities of rural areas.
The next few weeks will be decisive for Las Merindades. Citizen pressure could influence political decisions, while the actions of security forces will aim to prevent new incidents. The balance between essential services and security remains a major issue for the future of this region.
