In Spain, the telecoms operator Digi is experiencing remarkable expansion, with more than 10 million users, but this success masks growing difficulties in terms of customer retention. Recent data reveals a significant rise in dropouts, particularly in the fixed bandwidth segment, raising questions about the sustainability of its low-price model.
Digi's broadband customer churn rate reached 15.8% in 2025, an increase of three points from the previous year. This worrying trend comes despite some of the most competitive prices on the market, suggesting that pricing alone is no longer enough to retain subscribers in an increasingly demanding sector.
User complaints about service outages jumped 59% last year, with longer and more frequent interruptions. These technical malfunctions, often linked to critical days, erode consumer confidence and partly explain the acceleration of departures, even if Digi remains the leader in terms of new acquisitions.
In this context, competition is intensifying, with Vodafone becoming a direct target for Digi, which aims to consolidate its third place in the Spanish market. The record portabilities demonstrate the initial attractiveness of the operator, but the battle to keep these won customers is proving more complex, requiring investments in quality of service.
At the same time, the Spanish media landscape is evolving, as evidenced by the recent closure of regional public channels such as ETB3 and ETB4, announced in March 2026. This restructuring towards digital, with the launch of adapted versions such as ETB1 ON, reflects a broader trend towards the convergence of linear and on-demand content, also impacting the telecoms sector.
Digi's challenges illustrate a broader phenomenon in the telecommunications industry, where loyalty is becoming a key issue in the face of consumer volatility. As the operator continues to grow, its ability to improve the reliability of its network will be instrumental in maintaining its position against established rivals.
Analysts emphasize that, in a saturated market, differentiation through quality of service is essential. Digi must therefore balance its low-cost approach with investments in infrastructure to reduce outages and meet growing expectations for stable connectivity.
At a time when digitalization is accelerating in Spain, Digi's performance will serve as a barometer for the future of alternative operators. Its trajectory, marked by record gains but fragile retention, offers valuable lessons about evolving business strategies in the technology and media sector.
