La fin d'une ère pour Eterna : liquidation après 163 ans d'histoire

The German fashion landscape has just suffered a major shock with the announcement of the final liquidation of the Eterna house. Founded in 1863, this men's ready-to-wear institution had spanned the centuries before filing for bankruptcy last December. The first brands have already started their liquidation sales, marking the gradual end of an exceptional industrial adventure.

The news was confirmed by several sources close to the matter, indicating that the entire network of physical stores would be closed by summer 2026. This decision comes after several months of increasing financial difficulties for the company, which still employed several hundred people across the country. The first stores affected are located in Bavaria and the Rhine-Main region.

The consequences for customers are immediate and significant. The official e-shop has already ceased operations, preventing any online ordering. Warranties on recently purchased products may no longer be honored, depending on available information. Gift card holders are invited to use them quickly before the final closure of points of sale.

In an unexpected twist, competing brand Olymp bought the rights to the Eterna label, thus preserving its intellectual heritage. This agreement could allow certain iconic products to be reborn under another brand, offering a glimmer of hope to loyal consumers. However, this transaction will not save direct jobs linked to the stores.

The clearance sales currently underway feature discounts of up to 70% on all collections. The remaining stocks of shirts, suits and accessories are being sold gradually, attracting many customers to the brands concerned. Some stores already display signs announcing the upcoming closure.

This disappearance is part of a broader context of transformation of the fashion sector in Germany. Several historic brands have experienced similar difficulties in recent years, faced with competition from e-commerce and changes in consumption habits. Eterna nevertheless represented a pillar of the national textile industry.

Employees affected by these closures will benefit from a supported social plan, according to statements from staff representatives. Retraining training is planned to facilitate their integration into other companies in the sector or in related fields. The regional government is closely monitoring this delicate social situation.

Despite this announced end, Eterna's legacy will remain engraved in the history of German fashion. A pioneer in the manufacture of quality shirts, the company was able to weather wars and economic crises before succumbing to the challenges of the 21st century. Its name will remain associated with artisanal know-how and timeless elegance.
