Bundestag debates fight against violence against women

This Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Bundestag devoted a special parliamentary session to the issue of violence against women and girls. This “current moment”, initiated by the groups of the ruling coalition, aims to strengthen protection measures and coordinate actions between the State and civil society.

The plenary session takes place in a context where several high-profile cases have put this subject at the heart of German public debate. The parliamentarians stressed the need for a global approach, combining prevention, protection of victims and appropriate sanctions against the perpetrators of violence.

The discussions highlighted persistent challenges in implementing existing policies. Despite recent legislative progress, associations point out the gaps in support for victims and the sometimes long delays in obtaining effective protection.

Several speakers insisted on the systemic nature of this violence, which transcends social and cultural divisions. The educational dimension was particularly highlighted, with calls to strengthen awareness programs from an early age.

The debate also addressed the question of resources allocated to emergency reception and accommodation structures. Parliamentarians spoke of the need for sustainable funding for specialized centers, some of which are currently operating on the verge of saturation.

On a legal level, concrete proposals have been formulated to improve the processing of cases by the justice system. This includes better training of the professionals concerned and reinforced coordination between the different services involved.

The European dimension has not been forgotten, with references to Germany's international commitments in the fight against gender-based violence. MEPs recalled the importance of harmonizing approaches within the European Union.

This parliamentary session is part of a broader dynamic of citizen mobilization, as evidenced by the recent demonstrations organized in several German cities. It could pave the way for new legislative initiatives in the months to come.
