This Wednesday morning, shortly before 11 a.m., a major technical incident plunged part of the town of Iserlohn into darkness. A fire broke out at an electrical transformer station located on Gerichtsstraße, triggering a widespread power outage that affected several key areas of the municipality.
Emergency services, including the police and firefighters, were immediately mobilized to the scene. Teams from Iserlohn municipal services were also dispatched to try to contain the fire and restore power supply as quickly as possible. The intervention proved complex due to the nature of the installations affected.
The consequences of this outage were quickly felt in several sensitive institutions. The city's two hospitals, the Elisabeth-Hospital and another medical establishment, had to immediately switch to their emergency generators to ensure continuity of patient care. No interruption of vital services has been reported thanks to these emergency devices.
The education sector has also been strongly impacted. The Fachhochschule Südwestfalen, an important higher education establishment in the region, as well as the Alexanderhöhe district, were deprived of electricity. Many academic activities had to be suspended or urgently reorganized, creating significant disruption for students and staff.
Beyond institutions, several residential neighborhoods have suffered the effects of this cut. The Drüppel sector, in particular, found itself without power supply, affecting hundreds of homes. Road traffic was also disrupted by the malfunction of several traffic lights, requiring special intervention by the police to regulate traffic.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the origin of the fire was technical, linked to a malfunction within the transformer station. Experts from municipal technical services are currently examining the equipment to determine the exact causes of this incident and assess possible material damage.
This event highlights the vulnerability of urban energy infrastructure and the importance of business continuity plans for essential services. The speed of implementation of emergency systems in hospitals demonstrates the effectiveness of the emergency protocols put in place by local authorities.
While technical teams continue their efforts to completely restore power supply, municipal authorities ensure they are monitoring the situation closely and will communicate regularly on the progress of operations. Recommendations have been sent to the residents concerned to deal with this exceptional situation.
