The Brazilian book market growing in 2025

The publishing sector in Brazil is experiencing a notable resurgence of interest, according to data published this Thursday, March 26, 2026 by the Brazilian Book Chamber in collaboration with Nielsen BookData. This survey, entitled “Panorama of book consumption”, highlights an encouraging increase in purchases of physical and digital books throughout the national territory.

Figures indicate that 18% of the Brazilian adult population purchased at least one book during the year 2025. This proportion represents an increase of two percentage points compared to the previous year, equivalent to around three million new readers or collectors. This positive trend occurs in an economic context still marked by uncertainties.

Demographic analysis reveals that young adults aged 18 to 34 are the group with the greatest growth, with an increase exceeding three percentage points. This dynamic suggests a generational renewal of cultural practices, potentially influenced by digital platforms and new forms of literary mediation.

A particularly remarkable aspect of this study concerns the profile of consumers. Women now represent 61% of the book-buying public in Brazil. Among them, black and mixed-race women from class C emerge as the most important segment, constituting 15% of all buyers over the last twelve months.

This development could reflect more profound social changes, particularly in terms of access to education and economic emancipation. Analysts emphasize that this category of the population, traditionally less targeted by the cultural industries, shows a growing appetite for symbolic goods.

However, industry experts remain cautious about interpreting this data. The increase in sales does not necessarily translate into an equivalent increase in time spent reading. Several factors, such as the accumulation of unread works or purchases for decorative purposes, could partly explain this statistical growth.

The survey methodology, based on purchase declarations, also presents certain limitations. It does not make it possible to precisely measure actual reading practices, nor the quality of interactions with texts. Additional studies would be necessary to assess the real impact of this consumption on literary skills and intellectual development.

Despite these reservations, Brazilian publishers welcome these indicators. They see it as an opportunity to develop collections better suited to these new audiences and to expand distribution networks, particularly in peripheral regions and areas less well served by traditional bookstores.
