The European rail landscape is experiencing a significant revival with the reintroduction of a direct nighttime connection between Berlin and Paris. This service, which was interrupted last December, is coming back to life under the leadership of private operators determined to revitalize night travel on the continent.
The first run of the new train took place on Thursday evening from the Gare du Nord in Paris, precisely at 6:03 p.m. After a discreet but symbolic inauguration ceremony, the convoy began its maiden journey to the German capital, generating notable media interest in this sustainable mobility project.
European Sleeper, the Dutch-Belgian company behind this initiative, has established a balanced circulation schedule. Departures from Berlin are scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while returns from Paris are on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. This organization allows for regular coverage throughout the week.
The entire journey requires approximately sixteen hours, a duration that turns the trip into an experience in its own right. Unlike air transport, this night train allows passengers to sleep comfortably while traveling, thus optimizing their travel time. Intermediate stops are deliberately limited to preserve the fluidity of the route.
This rail renaissance takes place in a European context favorable to ecological alternatives to short and medium-haul air travel. Significantly reduced carbon emissions, coupled with a more authentic travel experience, are the main arguments in favor of this mode of transport.
The previous shutdown of the Nightjet connection operated by Austrian Railways had created a gap in the night-time transport offer between the two capitals. The return of this connection demonstrates the resilience of the night train economic model and responds to growing demand from travelers concerned about their environmental footprint.
On a practical level, the service offers different comfort classes, from standard berths to private compartments, thus targeting a varied clientele ranging from tourists to business travelers. The service will notably include Hamburg from July 13, thus expanding the network of possible connections.
This private initiative opens encouraging prospects for the future of cross-border transport in Europe. It demonstrates a change in mentalities where travel once again becomes an experience to be savored rather than a simple time constraint, while actively contributing to continental climate objectives.
