The Vatican stated on Wednesday that the health of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI had deteriorated due to age and that doctors are continuously monitoring the 95-year-old's condition.
In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world when he made the almost unprecedented decision to resign, citing 'advanced age.'
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said that Pope Francis, who on Wednesday asked the faithful to pray for Benedict, visited his predecessor at the Vatican monastery where the retired pope has lived since his retirement in February 2013.
“Regarding the state of health of Pope Emeritus, for whom Pope Francis requested prayers at the end of his general audience this morning, I can confirm that in the last hours a worsening due to advanced age has occurred,” Bruni said in a written statement.
