From tourism to terrorism, what has become of Haiti?

Haiti, once an Eden for travelers in search of pristine beaches and majestic mountains, today finds itself in a spiral of inhumane violence. Where the island's vibrant culture once attracted tourists from around the world, the streets are now scarred by acts of terror carried out by armed groups armed with advanced weapons of war. The question arises: how did a haven of peace turn into a zone of conflict, and to what extent is human dignity violated?

Some facts

In Canaan, a peaceful march led by Pastor Marco turned into a massacre on August 26, 2023, with innocent faithful executed by terrorists before the world watched. In Carrefour-Feuilles, residents were forced to leave their homes, under bullets no less. In Solino, heavily armed gangs continue to sow terror, targeting figures like professor Solon Fortunat and police officer Wilio Idoccy.

The act of too much

Every day, throughout Haiti, entire families are tragically targeted by terrorists and lose their lives in the face of this unbridled violence. A population that is being machine-gunned by armed terrorist groups in a completely indiscriminate manner; fathers, mothers, grandparents and children are executed every day throughout Haiti.

The proliferation of weapons of war in the hands of these terrorists is alarming. This armed escalation, combined with suspicions of external support, possibly from politicians or businessmen, is exacerbating the crisis.

Sprinkled with a widespread food crisis

For almost all residents, the search for food is a constant struggle, a race against time to secure even one dish per day to share with the family. Hollow bellies resonate with the silent cry of those who, day after day, face the injustice of persistent hunger. This food insecurity, symptomatic of a deeper malaise, is the reflection of a nation plagued by immense socio-economic challenges and of the population.

These scenes of anarchy and despair are light years from the days when Haiti was a beacon for tourism. After the 2010 earthquake, the country had already suffered, but nothing could predict such a collapse of social order.

With each passing day and no sign of change on the horizon, hope seems to fade. It is high time that the international community took a serious look at the situation and provided the necessary support; Haitians need it to find their way to a more peaceful and promising future.
