The Baena Denomination of Origin (DO) celebrated, this Thursday, March 19, 2026, the presentation of its 33rd Quality Awards during a ceremony organized at the Teatro El Jardinito de Cabra. This annual event, which brings together the major players in the olive industry, rewards the most remarkable extra virgin olive oils produced in this protected geographical area of southern Spain.
The winners were selected from cooperatives and businesses in the municipalities of Luque, Baena, Doña Mencía, Albendín and Cabra. These distinctions, awarded by the Regulatory Council of the DO Baena, highlight the diversity and richness of the aromatic profiles offered by local olive groves, ranging from green fruity to ripe fruity.
In the ripe fruit category, the gold medal was awarded to Sucesores de Hermanos López S.A., a company based in Luque. This prestigious award highlights the traditional know-how and technical innovation deployed to obtain an oil with soft and balanced notes, characteristic of olives harvested at full maturity.
Meanwhile, the non-bitter green fruit category saw the Olivarera Cooperative Society of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Baena win first prize. The silver medal went to the Cooperativa Nuestra Señora de la Consolación de Doña Mencía, thus confirming the exceptional quality of the productions of this locality.
These prices come in a context where international demand for quality olive oils continues to grow. The Baena region, with its favorable Mediterranean climate and limestone soils, benefits from worldwide recognition, reinforced by events such as these annual distinctions which guarantee the authenticity and excellence of the products.
In addition to the awards given to the oils, the ceremony also honored personalities engaged in the promotion and dissemination of knowledge about olive oil. This initiative aims to raise awareness among the general public of the nutritional and gastronomic virtues of this emblematic product of the Mediterranean diet.
The economic impact of these distinctions is significant for local producers. The medals obtained constitute a strong commercial argument, allowing the winners to stand out in increasingly competitive markets, both in Spain and for export, particularly to Europe and the United States.
The success of this 33rd edition testifies to the vitality of the olive sector in Andalusia and the constant commitment of producers to maintaining high quality standards. It also reinforces the image of DO Baena as an essential label of excellence in the Spanish agri-food landscape.
