Matan Zaken : les ombres derrière l'étoile montante de la gastronomie française

The French gastronomic scene is shaken by revelations concerning Matan Zaken, this young 32-year-old chef who had conquered social networks and prestigious guides. While his restaurant Nhome, opening in 2022 in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, was full for months, testimonies from former employees tarnish this carefully constructed image.

Born in Jerusalem in 1993 and arrived in France as a teenager, Matan Zaken followed classical training in hospitality before doing his military service in Israel. His return to France was marked by the launch of a high-end catering service, a prelude to the opening of Nhome. This exemplary career earned him rapid recognition, including two renewed Michelin stars and prestigious invitations such as the Cannes Film Festival.

Behind this media success story, however, hide less rosy realities. Several former team members describe extreme work schedules, with days regularly exceeding twelve hours without adequate compensation. These conditions would have led to a significant turnover in the kitchens of the Parisian restaurant, a phenomenon hardly compatible with the image of excellence conveyed publicly.

The accusations also relate to managerial methods qualified as psychological violence. Witnesses speak of public humiliations, demeaning remarks and constant pressure that exceeds the traditional demanding standards of haute cuisine. These practices, if confirmed, raise questions about the limits of professional standards in a sector renowned for its harshness.

The affair comes at a time when the French restaurant industry is experiencing debates over working conditions. After the #MeToo movement in gastronomy and the revelations about certain great chefs, the sector is trying to reform itself. The accusations against Matan Zaken are a reminder that the younger generations of cooks, despite their mastery of modern media codes, are not necessarily exempt from the traditional excesses of the industry.

Communication around the chef, particularly active on social networks where he cultivates a “cool and accessible” image, contrasts sharply with the testimonies collected. This dissonance questions the authenticity of media personalities in contemporary gastronomy, where the construction of a public image can sometimes mask problematic professional realities.

Legally, the allegations could have significant consequences. If evidence of moral harassment or non-compliance with labor law were established, Matan Zaken and its establishment would be exposed to prosecution. The Labor Inspectorate could be contacted, while the Michelin Guide, which has made the young chef one of its protégés, should take a position on these accusations.

This affair goes beyond the simple individual case to touch on the evolution of French gastronomy. It questions the balance between culinary excellence and respect for workers' rights, between demanding tradition and managerial modernity. While France celebrates its cuisine as cultural heritage, these revelations remind us that the behind the scenes of gastronomic temples deserve as much attention as their plates.
