We are in Canaan, a district north of Port-au-Prince in Haiti. It used to be a place where people who lost everything in the 2010 earthquake could find some peace. But in recent years it has become infamous for the gangs that spread terror there.
On Saturday, August 26, 2023, an already tense situation took a terrible turn. Pastor Marco (whose real name is Marcorel Zidor) of the Bethesda Evangelical Pool Church had decided to organize a peaceful march to protest against the bandits. He hoped that with enough people, they could show these bandits that they were not afraid.
But everything went wrong. Instead of a peaceful march, Canaan became the scene of a bloodbath. Videos of this march, showing innocent worshippers caught in a hail of bullets, began to circulate everywhere on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok.
Many believe that the gangs have powerful supporters, possibly even politicians or businessmen. And even the police and the army seem to struggle to stop them.
En creusant un peu plus, on découvre que le pasteur Marco, bien que loué pour sa bravoure initiale, n’était pas sans controverses. Il avait promis d’attaquer ces bandits, suscitant l’admiration de certains et l’inquiétude de nombreux autres. Le quartier même où il prêchait, Caradeux, est sous l’influence d’un autre gangster notoire, Vitelhomme.
Vu ce qui s’est passé à Canaan, beaucoup se demandent comment Haïti pourra jamais trouver la paix. La journée du 26 août 2023 restera dans les mémoires comme un triste rappel de combien le chemin vers cette paix peut être dangereux et difficile.
Mais une chose est sûre : le peuple haïtien ne renoncera pas si facilement. Ils continueront à se battre pour un meilleur avenir.
