King Harald V of Norway dies at 89, Prince Haakon succeeds him

Le roi Harald V est décédé vendredi 29 août à Oslo à l'âge de 89 ans. Le souverain norvégien a succombé à 06h35 à l'hôpital universitaire d'Oslo, selon l'annonce officielle du palais royal.

Harald V avait été admis la semaine précédente pour le traitement d'une affection sanguine rare. Les membres de la famille royale lui ont rendu visite dans les vingt-quatre heures précédant sa mort. Des dizaines de Norvégiens ont déposé des fleurs devant le palais royal d'Oslo dès l'annonce de sa dégradation.

The royal flag hoisted on the roof of the palace was lowered to half-mast. Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon were at the side of the dying monarch.

The Norwegian crown now falls to Prince Haakon, 51 years old. This succession occurs in a climate of heated controversy surrounding his wife. Mette-Marit corresponded with American financier Jeffrey Epstein between 2011 and 2014, long after the latter's conviction for sex trafficking.

These revelations, which emerged in recent months, have shaken the Norwegian monarchy. Voices were raised to ask for clarification on the nature of these exchanges. The royal palace has maintained a cautious silence on this matter.

Harald V was Norway's first domestically born king in generations. His three-decade reign accompanied the modernization of the Nordic monarchy. The late monarch suffered from recurring health problems for several years.
